The Causeries du Lundi 1880, Inc. is the oldest women's literary society in the U.S extant today. Founded in 1880 by Elizabeth Hamilton Collum, the granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, the name was borrowed from the topical Le Constitutionnel column, "Monday Chats," penned by French literary figure Charles Augustin Saint-Beuve. Mrs. Collum noted in the anniversary book of 1930 that she believed in a "better future for American women than a life of frivolity." The group continues to meet on the first Monday of every month, seven months a year, to hear papers offered by members of the Causeries ranging in topic from memoir and academic, to the provocative and historic. The Causeries' unique collection of historical documents is made available to the public through its archival affiliation with the New York Historical Society.
